Dr. Alvera McMillan is the founder of AM Education Solutions.
She is an education researcher and practitioner with more than a decade of experience in K–12 education, having served as a secondary educator, literacy interventionist, and instructional coach in the United States, Nigeria, and Spain. She brings this global perspective to her community-centered education efforts.
Her work supports schools through place-based, interdisciplinary literacy learning and applied research. She bridges research and practice by designing locally grounded learning experiences for educators and students that demonstrate how interdisciplinary literacy and STEM engagement in community-relevant contexts enhance student achievement, foster sociocultural development, and strengthen long-term community resilience.
In addition to authoring The Learning Landscape, Dr. McMillan has led multiple federally funded projects, published in The Geography Teacher, and has a forthcoming publication in the Middle School Journal. Her professional recognitions include West Feliciana Middle School Teacher of the Year (2017), service on the National Geographic Society’s Teacher Advisory Council (2019-2021), and selection as a NASEM GRP Early Career Research Fellow (2024).

"The science of literacy and the science of place-based education have historically been on two separate tracks. In The Learning Landscape, Alvera McMillan persuasively brings them together.
Working with "challenged readers," she demonstrates that place-based approaches to literacy engage students more and lead students to becoming more academically successful."

"McMillan reminds educators and others how adolescent learning can reflect “meaning, value, and joy.” This book is a celebration of the exceptional ways she intersected literacy, nature place-based learning, and community into an interdisciplinary pedagogy. Her framework is powerful. Like McMillan, every educator should consciously seek students’ strengths while building their capacity as learners within a community context."
